What is Microsoft 365? Microsoft 365 is a powerhouse suite of cloud-based productivity tools designed to help you work smarter, collaborate seamlessly, and achieve more—whether you’re at your desk, on the move, or somewhere in between. It’s essentially a toolbox for anyone looking to streamline their work and bring their best ideas to life.

At its core, Microsoft 365 includes the classic apps many of us grew up using, like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. But it has evolved significantly over the years, integrating tools like Teams for communication, OneDrive for cloud storage, and SharePoint for document management and collaboration. And the beauty of it? Everything is designed to work together effortlessly. You can start a draft in Word, share it in Teams, save it to OneDrive, and collaborate in real-time with colleagues across the globe.

A Look Back at How Far Microsoft Has Come

I’ve been working with Microsoft tools for as long as I’ve had a career—since 1993! Back then, it was all about Microsoft Office on floppy disks, with clunky interfaces and minimal features compared to what we have today. I vividly remember using Word for typing up documents and PowerPoint for creating basic (and I mean basic) presentations. Over the years, I’ve watched these tools grow and change, keeping up with the times—and sometimes even leading the charge.

One thing that stands out is the sheer transformation from standalone software to this integrated ecosystem we now know as Microsoft 365. Even the name has evolved. It started as Office, then became Office 365, and finally Microsoft 365 to reflect just how multifaceted it’s become. Yet, despite the changes, Word and PowerPoint remain staples in my workflow. I use them almost daily for everything from writing blog posts like this one to designing polished presentations.

The Basics of Microsoft 365 Tools

Here’s a quick overview of the key tools you’ll find in Microsoft 365:
